DJ Headphones

Like all DJ equipment, headphones are an essential part of the setup, and it pays for a DJ to make sure that they invest in a good set of headphones. Out of all the headphones mentioned on this site, DJ headphones are arguably the ones that need to tick all of the boxes. They need to be powerful, loud enough to hear over the top of a packed nightclub. They need to have excellent bass response and definition, a DJ needs to know exactly what they are playing after all. They need to be strong and sturdy as they are likely to be getting battered about a lot. They need to be comfortable as a DJ set can last several hours. And they need to be compact enough so as not to get in the way during a set and to allow quick packing away at the end of a night.

A good set of DJ headphones will do all of these and often more. Look for a strong, sturdy set of phones that weigh a decent amount and won't break when they get dropped, as they will get dropped at one time or another. Ideally they will fold up or close away to make them easy to pack up and often they will come with their own carry bag which can be quite handy. Read as many reviews as you can or even better, try a pair yourself, maybe auditioning somebody's at a gig to test them in a working situation. Make sure you can hear everything clearly and ensure that extended use isn't making your ears uncomfortable. They should always be closed headphones, these will drown out a lot more of the external noise and make everything you should be hearing crystal clear. The cord should be long and coiled, you will need a lot of length and a straight cord will just get in the way and catch under your feet or around your kit; a coiled cord can stretch for ages but can stay tucked out of the way when you need it to. Your DJ headphones should also come with a choice of input jacks, both small and large.
